Our Story
Unmuted unmasked
Broadcaster. Radio Industry Leader and Founder. Communications Coach. Keynote Speaker. Outreach Care Practitioner. Proud Adopted Scot. Music Aficiondo. Change Maker
Meet Gary Robinson, curator of stories and a man who claims to have
never worked a day in his whole life.
But what a life he has lived: from teenage radio geek to national radio leader (and award winner!), international communications leader and keynote speaker,
broadcaster, presenter and Outreach Care Worker.
Gary founded Unmuted through his belief that most of the pain and unkindness in today’s world is due to a lack of analogue communication and connection.

From his first love at the age of 14, Gary pursued a career in radio with huge success.
Combining his love of music with a desire to communicate, Gary moved from the role of tea boy through presenting roles to ultimately leading a number of esteemed regional and national radio stations.
His years in radio saw him hone his leadership skills, sharpen his corporate dialogue and fuse creativity with commercial acumen to deliver success for listeners, teams and shareholders alike.
Then followed a freelance career, coaching, training and consulting organisations in the UK and abroad in the skills of communication and presentation.
A wonderful and rewarding time that was sadly cut short when his father was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia.
This pivot point in Gary’s career saw him turn to a domestic carer bringing both of his parents to live with him and his partner.
In Gary’s words “This took its toll on all of us, living under one roof compounded by my lack of understanding about living with Dementia, being thrust into the role of unpaid carer for dad, gormless, ignorant and in way above my head.”

The toll of life’s events led Gary ultimately to a place where he himself needed help. The crutch of alcohol had its grip and he credits the glorious NHS and Alcoholics Anonymous for saving his life.
Proudly sober and ready to embark on his next step Gary was called to a career in health and social care. “Perhaps it was due to my lived experience of addiction, perhaps empathy for my stepdad’s illness or perhaps a need to contribute something tangible to my community.”
And so began his retraining as an Outreach Support Worker within his community in East Scotland. Wonderful work with wonderful, unique and loving individuals many of whom have experienced significant trauma, a lack of love, kindness and understanding, people who have been bullied, abandoned and stigmatised.
During COVID Gary and lifelong friend and entrepreneur Ian Halifax developed an idea to provide information and entertainment exclusively for Carers. Gary collaborated with UK radio stalwart John Dash, PR supremo Hedley Finn OBE and business leader Nicola Murgatroyd to establish Care Radio
Gary is perpetually looking for solutions to discord and better communication throughout life and now combines his rare and exceptional range of skills to enhance communication in care, develop emotional intelligence in care teams and leaders, and to share with passion the stories of quiet greatness that would otherwise go unheard.
Unmuted believes in building connection, within yourself, with others, with the wider world.
We want to hear your story. We want to tell your story through Connected Communication. We want you to become an improved communicator using emotional intelligence, storytelling and empathy.
We want you to be Unmuted.
